LIL – Lips in Lush

This album cover scared me, not gonna lie.

LIL was actually hella unique in the fact that they used American influences in their music. When I first listened to the album I didn’t know what to expect, but from hearing the hotness of Me,Too I had to give the album a listen. In the end I discovered another Jtek group worth mentioning.

The Group is similar to capsule in that there is a Male DJ, and his ho that sings for him. There are other groups that follow this formula like Candy Bear Stupid!, Fizzy Dino Pop, Sweet Vacation, COLTEMONIKHA.

Me,Too is the type of song that you could find at a rave or pool party or some shit. Its hella catchy, all though its lyrics are complete nonsense it helps the song like DISCO DISCO DISCO DISCONECTION!!! On top of that the production is on point, it knocks like no other, im not shitting you TSUGE(the producer) has got it like that. I also like how they just randomly threw in Michael Jackson in to the lyrics, which adds to its nonsense.

Most Japanese producers jump on the American bandwagon and usually sound hella mediocre, which is sad for a country that has had a long and lasting music industry, to still have their talent still looking towards the east for inspiration, so props to TSUGE for carving his own unique sound into the album.

Songs like “Moshi Moshi” Radio, and Dance on the Floor are incredibly well done and pieced together rather nicely, they flow. Both are highlights on the album, especially with Dance on the Floor’s killer pre chorus, and then its bridge is hella orgasmic. You don’t see it coming and when it does show up, it BLOWS YOUR MIND. “Moshi” will get you dancing, I assure you. It sounds hella futuristic and hella echoey. Supersonic is something that I would hear on a runway, or some artsy gallery meets orgy.

There is pop genius afoot here, and it’s abundant. There really isn’t a weak song on here, unless you count the obligatory remix at the end of the album. Uninspired and tame.  Lesson One is the most rocky song of the album, also the screams in the prechorus are fucking heavy. and Block Out could be the filler of the album, but it’s really not. It stands out especially the “All night long” break down. Then again, all the songs do. Something hard to do when it comes to the genre, in short to say I was never bored while listening to this album.

Now onto the vocalist ucio, this girl is the SHIT. Seriously, she has the BEST voice for the jtek genre hands down. Actually she has the one of the best voices I have heard in a LONG time, she shits on ayumi’s out of control vibrato and Koda “I need to ad lib right this minute!” Kumi. With all these quiet girls who only sing when told and rarely ad lib or let their power come out, they just sing. ucio’s voice takes control of the song. Shes got vocal swagger for daaaaays. You never get the feeling like shes only being told to sing something, rather only doing what she wants. She also uses little vocoder, which is a nice thing. Her voice is hella unique and is nasally, but it works. She can sing whistle notes as evidenced in the beautifully synthesized Flashback Love. This girl is a bonafide diva.

GRADE: S

This album is a must listen for anybody who loves the Jtek genre, LIL brings something fresh and new. In fact this is for anybody that wants good techno music or good music in general. Its gets you dancing and keeps your attention and every song can stand well on its own, which is what really any pop dance record should do, Brava.
